Liz Hanks

May 10 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

It is a privilege to have the cellist Liz Hanks with us. This extraordinary musician has recently played at the post classical night Counter Chamber in London and it’s simply brilliant to have her play in Bath. Don’t miss this special night.

Based on the local and natural history of her neighbourhood in Sheffield, Liz Hanks’ album ‘Land’ (Hudson Records) explores both the loss of nature in the urban environment and forgotten natural worlds. Uncovering Meersbrook’s forgetten past as a picturesque valley known as ‘Rush Dale’, Liz found inspiration in written records of this bygone landscape. In remembrance of these lost places, she performs ‘Land’ live with a solo cello and immersive field recordings from the Meersbrook area.

In her album, Liz delves into various influences drawn from her career as a cellist, including elements of minimalism, folk, Indian classical music, and improvisation.  Having moved to Sheffield in the 90s, Liz soon became immersed in the local popular music scene. Long-standing cellist with Richard Hawley and Thea Gilmore, Liz has been influenced and shaped by a varied career, recording and touring with artists including Liam Gallagher, Self Esteem and Pulp, and in the folk scene with Cara Dillon and Sheffield’s own Martin Simpson.

Liz has recently worked on projects with sound artist, producer and beatboxer Jason Singh and with the Real World Records sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun.
