It’s all go at The Grapes with the bar set to close for a couple of days for some work!
While some think winter is a quieter time for pubs, we’d definitely call ourselves a winter pub. True, we might not have roaring fires, but our cosy little bar seems to hit just the right notes for those seeking warmth, fun, and good company during the darker months.
And it’s been busier than usual lately—not just with customers but with plans. In fact, we’ll be closing for a couple of days next week to give the bar some much-needed TLC.
Why the Refresh?
It all started with necessity. Our beloved zinc bar top, which Jonny and I installed back in 2019, is showing some serious wear and tear. But why stop there? With the bar top coming off, it’s a cellar technician’s dream opportunity—so we’re replacing the beer lines while we’re at it.
We’ll also be installing some shiny new fonts and… drum roll, please… a brand-new nitro stout! Plus, we’re adding another real ale line to keep all you beer enthusiasts smiling.
The Work Begins
The transformation kicks off this Sunday after our much-loved Sunday Session, featuring the brilliant Psycho Acoustic Goat from 4pm. Once their last note fades, the bar closes early, and the hard work begins.
The whole team’s getting stuck in. We’ll be sugar-soaping walls and ceilings, repainting, restringing fairy lights, and generally buzzing around until we reopen on the evening of March 5th, just in time for our weekly Jazz Night.
Cellar Makeover
This follows months of work down in the cellar. We’ve expanded the cold room to accommodate even more lovely real ales. And after years of various building projects, we’ve finally tackled the mountain of tools and kit. Our long-standing plan to restore the cellar is well underway—those 10 tubs of lime wash we bought ages ago are finally getting put to good use!
Same Grapes, Just Better
The result? An even better Grapes. And who knows—Jonny and I might even manage a wee break after all this! It’s been a tough couple of years, but we’re not going anywhere. Just a refreshed bar, exciting new beers, and the same warm welcome you know and love.
