It’s funny how life works sometimes. You pop into a pub for a quick pint after work, catch someone’s eye across the bar during a jazz session, or find yourself chatting to a stranger whilst a traditional Irish folk band plays in the background. Before you know it, that chance encounter becomes something rather special.

For over two centuries, The Grapes has been bringing people together. Since we first opened our doors as The Bunch of Grapes in 1792, these walls have witnessed countless conversations, friendships, and yes, quite a few love stories along the way. With Valentine’s Day approaching, we thought it was high time we celebrated the couples who found each other right here in our historic freehouse.

Where Real Connections Still Happen

We’ll be honest with you—in a world dominated by dating apps and endless swiping, there’s something rather lovely about the idea of meeting someone the old-fashioned way. You know, in an actual place, having an actual conversation, over an actual drink. No filters, no carefully curated profiles, just genuine human connection in a room full of live music and good company.

Maybe it’s the live music that does it—there’s something about jazz on a Wednesday or folk on a Thursday that gets people chatting. Or perhaps it’s just that when you’re in a room full of people who’ve come for the music rather than staring at a screen, conversation happens naturally. Radical thought, we know.

So here’s what we’re doing. If you met your partner, spouse, or significant other at The Grapes, we want to know about it. Was it love at first sight over cocktails at the bar? Did you make eyes at each other during a live gig? Perhaps you bonded over craft beers and discovered you had everything in common?

Whatever your story, we’d love to hear it. In the words of Charlie, who helps run things around here: “The Grapes has always been a place where people connect. With live music most nights of the week and various community events, we naturally bring people together. Over the years, we’ve watched friendships form and romances blossom within these walls. With Valentine’s Day approaching, we thought it would be lovely to celebrate the couples who met here and share their stories.”

Look, we’re not here to slag off dating apps. They’ve got their place, and plenty of people find love that way. But there’s something undeniably special about meeting someone organically, in a space that values authenticity, community, and genuine conversation.

At The Grapes, we’ve always prided ourselves on being a bit different. No themes, no screens, no betting machines—just us, great drinks from local producers, and a lively programme of grassroots live music at least five nights a week. It’s an atmosphere that encourages real interaction, and sometimes, if you’re lucky, that interaction turns into something wonderful.
