Scout and Sage – Meet the Producer

International Women's Day,Meet the Producer

Another in celebration of International Women’s Day, our Meet the Producer this time is Holly from Scout and Sage who make the most amazing gins for the bar, including the scrumptious Raspberry and Hibiscus that sells like hot cakes all year round and our Blood Orange gin for Christmas that folks just can’t get enough of….which is handy as Holly usually has a stall at the Bath Christmas Market being the enterprising soul she is, so they never go home disappointed.

Name: Holly Bower

Age: 46

Pets: A tiny dog called Morris. He’s way too cute and melts hearts on a regular basis!

Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about what you do

I’ve lived in the beautiful city of Bath for most of my life and am the founder of Scout & Sage Micro Distillery which is based just on the outskirts.

I have the lovely job of creating gin for a living, and count myself lucky to meet lots of wonderful peeps along the way. I love to collaborate and have joined forces with some great local businesses to create their gin for them. There are many a brilliant establishment in my hometown and The Grapes is definitely one of them. They’re fully supportive of all I do, plus it’s easy to love them as their pub is blooooomin’ awesome!

I’ve also just founded Local Makers – B.o.A. Which is a monthly Artisan market based at St Margaret’s Hall, Bradford on Avon. It showcases local producers from food & drink to craft & homeware. Check our @local_maker_boa on instagram for more info.

How long have you been doing this job?

Scout and Sage was founded in 2016 and Local Makers BoA was founded in March 2022.

Tell us a bit more about your product, are there any you’ve developed yourself?

Scout & Sage Gin is distilled by me and I am proudly also stating, that it’s award winning! I’m fully involved in every aspect of it’s production, from making it to labelling by hand. I really enjoy coming up with the limited editions too. These are truly only made in small amounts. Inspiration for me comes from being out and about. I love walking and wild swimming, and inspiration is totally grabbed by taking from these moments, disconnecting from work and soaking up all of mother nature’s splendid offerings

What’s the best thing that has ever happened whilst you’ve been working in this industry?

Meeting tons of lovely, same minded business and makery folk, and picking up that Gold Taste of the West Award.

Tell us the worst thing about working in this business

It’s not that one single thing is the worst, it’s just that running a business is tough. It certainly ain’t easy! I’m sure most business owners will say the same. The rewards are there if you persevere through the worst feeling moments and talk the problems through with those around you.

Did you do a job before this one?

I was brought up in hospitality. My mum owned pubs, a wine bar and a wine shop in Bath in the 1990’s. I love wine too!

What’s the funniest thing which has ever happened to you on a work day?

I’d love to say, but I can’t. I truly can’t!!

Do you have any hobbies?

I’m starting to do linocuts and want to print them. I enjoy walking, swimming, photography, you know, arty farty stuff! I’m always up for cooking and dining out in a fine establishment with my lovely pals.

If you work with other people, what do you do to gel together as a team? OR If you work on your own, what is it that inspires you each day?

I have a lovely assistant who helps me called Laura.  She’s totally ace and I love working with her. Comedy and chatting away about everything and nothing gets us through the day.

Have you got any final words of wisdom to someone thinking of starting up in this industry?

I’m impulsive, so I’d never say don’t just go for it. But! Def think all through. If you have an overriding feeling than you can make it work. Go for it! Just remember, it’ll take alot if not all at times what you’ve got inside. You have to give it your all. I said before the rewards are there, they are, but they definitely won’t all be financial. Tbh, those ones that aren’t often prove to be the best. Life’s too short not to try.

Have you got any products on your website you might like to highlight or any offers to entice them your way?

If you see one of our Limited Editions on our website gin shop give it a try. Otherwise I do have a love affair with our classic London Dry Gin. The others are great too, obviously!
